Gunslingers Season Ends with Bright Future Ahead
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The San Antonio Gunslingers 2023 campaign ended with a 52-36 loss to the Carolina Cobras in Greensboro, North Carolina last Saturday, August 5th. The Gunslingers finished the year with a record of eight wins and five losses, a marked improvement over the previous years’ record of four wins and eight losses. This accomplishment is dimmed somewhat by the Gunslingers’ season-ending four game losing streak. This streak denied San Antonio a nearly certain appearance in the National Arena League (NAL) Championship Game.
The Gunslingers faced the hardest schedule of any team at the start of the year. They opened at home against the 2022 runner-up Carolina Cobras before embarking on a four game road trip to face the third place finisher Jacksonville Sharks followed by the defending league champion Albany Empire. San Antonio surpassed all reasonable expectations by winning all three games before adding two more road wins against the Fayetteville Mustangs and the West Texas Warbirds to put the Gunslingers atop the NAL with a record of five wins and no losses as they headed home the next week.
But their homecoming was spoiled by their first loss of the season to Jacksonville, which marked the turning point for San Antonio’s season. The Gunslingers posted three more wins, but only against opponents with losing records. They suffered a loss to the Orlando Predators in Orlando, and two consecutive losses to the Carolina Cobras to finish the regular season with a record of eight wins and four losses. These losses dropped the Gunslingers from first to third place in the league and denied San Antonio their first football home playoff game.
The Gunslingers look forward to many exciting changes as the team applies all of the lessons learned in 2023 to make 2024’s result even better for their fans, for the team, and for the NAL. The San Antonio Gunslingers want all of their fans and the rest of the league to know that they are not relaxing this off-season. They’re reloading. #GUNZUP
